The Trinity River Audubon Center of Dallas is quickly becoming one of Dallas’s most treasured and hidden jewels. Transformed from a 120 acre illegal landfill the City of Dallas and the National Audubon Society have reclaimed the land and invested nearly $40 million dollars in resurfacing and renovations in an effort to conserve the land and is the first LEED certified building constructed by the City of Dallas. The Audubon Society’s mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems primarily focusing on birds other wildlife and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the Earth’s biological diversity. The Trinity River Audubon Center was created as a sustainable building featuring recycled denim for insulation Texas grown bamboo for flooring and a recycled compilation of items including sawdust to create the multitude of bridges and decks found around the building. It even features a rainwater collection system to nourish surrounding foliage and irrigation.
Guests will begin their experience with the land and wildlife of Texas through interactive hands on activities. Afterwards guests will be able to venture outdoors to experience nature first-hand in the Great Trinity Forest the largest urban hardwood forest in the United States. Groups will have the opportunity to trek through nearly four miles of trails featuring recycled and decomposing granite for a more cushioned walk. A specialist in ornithology the study of birds will guide your group on a private walk along the trails to discover the multitude of birds that reside and migrate through North Texas at various times of the year. You will learn about the hobby of birding binoculars field guides keeping a life-list and the basics of bird identification.
